Street Sculpture Route II: 07. Untitled

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Route · Subcategory: Street sculpture II · Year: 1995 · Authors: Ulrich Rückriem

The German sculptor Ulrich Rückriem, an artist known for his abstract stone works and associated with minimalism and process art, created this untitled work in 1995 for the II Street Sculpture Exhibition.

Located at the upper part of the central promenade of Avenida 25 de Julio, the artist wanted to place his creation in close relation to the site where it stands. Five small granite stelae go almost unnoticed, were it not for their clear impact on the asphalt pavement where they rest. The ensemble adapts to the slope of the terrain itself, its uniqueness lying in the quality of the material used, which contrasts with the uniform asphalt surrounding it. Its horizontality, colour and surface, sometimes rough and other times smooth, give the work the appearance of tombstones on which schematic drawings and very simple geometric structures are depicted. This sculptural group is a clear example of the minimalism so present in its creator's professional career.
