Man on Horseback

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Sites of memory · Year: 1992 · Authors: Fernando Botero

The renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero participated in the II International Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1994 with this work created two years earlier.

It is one of his characteristic compositions that irreverently exploits the increase in volume in the figures, endowing them with an obese character that turns them into a curious and endearing genre style.

Botero has produced several works under the title Hombre a caballo in the form of oil paintings, drawings and sculptures. In this case, the figure is made of bronze on a concrete pedestal and we see how he emphasises the monumental and imperturbable character of the animal; the rider looks to one side with indifference and self-sufficiency.

The piece, returned after the Exhibition, was installed on Avenida Reyes Católicos, in what is now known as Plaza El Chapatal, near Plaza República Dominicana.
