El Tanque Cultural Space
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Cultural spaces · Subcategory: Museums · Year: 1997 · Authors: Felipe Artengo Rufino, Fernando Martín Menis, José María Rodríguez-Pastrana
This immense fuel tank that was part of the city's oil refinery facilities was preserved to house, after an interesting renovation, an exhibition hall and a museum centre. The adaptation of this huge disused industrial piece for cultural use was a project carried out in 1996 by the team of architects formed by Felipe Artengo, Fernando Martín Menis and José María Rodríguez-Pastrana.
The power of the enormous cylindrical structure shines inside through a system of ramps and canopies, built with the remains of another tank of similar characteristics. It is, broadly speaking, an interesting idea of recycling and adapting an obsolete element of the city's industrial heritage, now converted into a cultural space. It was inaugurated in 1997.
