Hotel Battenberg

This hotel, now disappeared, was located in the large triangular block between the Rambla and the streets Jesús and María and Viera y Clavijo. It was designed by the architect Mariano Estanga at the behest of a business company with Belgian and Spanish capital.

It was inaugurated on 24 December 1902 under the name Hotel Británico, later taking the name Hotel Battenberg, in honour of the surname of the Queen of Spain Victoria Eugenia, married in 1906 to Alfonso XIII. The hotel soon became a place of lodging for the numerous tourists, especially English, who stopped in Santa Cruz.

The building, which had a beautiful garden area, was built under the guidelines of colonial architecture, standing out in the middle of the exquisite Hotels neighbourhood. Over the years it was transformed into a clinic-sanatorium. Finally, it was demolished in 1970 and in its place a modern building was constructed, today surrounded by the original fence that enclosed the old hotel.
