Construction designed in 1932 by the architect Miguel Martín Fernández de la Torre as a residence and consulting room for Dr Ponce Arias.

Located opposite the Cabildo Insular de Gran Canaria building, Casa Ponce combines interesting characteristics of the rationalist architecture so practised by Miguel Martín: use of modern construction systems together with vernacular materials, such as volcanic stone for the plinth; symmetry on the façade, where the architect integrated, with independent entrances, the family home and the medical practice; corner windows; use of concrete slabs as architectural visors; and, finally, use of hierarchical and geometric relationships, as this house is set back from the street alignment due to its position on the corner opposite the Cabildo building.

The floor plan arises from two displaced rectangular blocks, which house the vertical circulation mechanisms inside. Of special relevance is the patio or garden with adjoining corridor that creates a domestic space reminiscent of traditional Canarian architecture and, at the same time, shows apparent modernity with its opening towards the street.

Dr Ponce's House is, ultimately, a magnificent example of the best rationalist architecture built in the Canary Islands.
