Rationalist Route II - 11. Fuentes House
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Routes · Subcategory: Rationalism route · Year: 1938 · Authors: Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre
One of the most imaginative solutions devised by the architect Martín Fernández de la Torre in the urban resolution of a plot with a double corner, within the Garden City area. The project was drafted in 1938 for the businessman Eufemiano Fuentes.
The house is articulated in several bodies of different heights and various setbacks. The main corner, the one with the greatest urban significance, is masterfully resolved through a play of elements: open terraces, others with pergolas; and closed volumes, without pillars supporting them, which creates a curious play of light and shadow through the structures arranged on different planes.
A notable feature is the cladding of plinths by means of roughcast with a Tyrolean finish, so characteristic in the work of Miguel Martín.
Inside, it is worth highlighting, on the one hand, the magnificent vestibule that articulates the entrance; on the other, the staircase that gives access to the upper floor and, finally, the spacious living room.
We are therefore faced with a great work of the most exquisite rationalism by Martín Fernández de la Torre, where he expresses his desire to build an addition of volumes very articulated among themselves, resulting in something harmonious and full of meaning.
