Rationalist Route II - 02. Casa Junco

This single-family house was designed in September 1929 by Miguel Martín Fernández de la Torre for Antonio Junco, with the idea of occupying a plot he owned located in what was then becoming Ciudad Jardín.

The building is one of the fundamental works to understand the extraordinary change, both in the use of the structure and in the very concept of the façade, that Miguel Martín was experiencing in his new typological scheme which clearly tended towards the foundations of the new rationalist architecture.  

In Casa Junco we find a flat roof with eaves, a smooth façade with slight decorative bands at window height, and cantilevers supported by pillars. But the main characteristic that links it to modern architecture is the composition of the openings: corner windows, continuous horizontal window and industrial carpentry; all novel elements. 

Overall, the work bears a certain Canarian character in its definition, with the continuous gallery that connects with the interior rooms and serves as a link between them, as is usual in traditional Canarian architecture.
