Rationalist Route II - 06. Casa Mulet II

This is the second project that Miguel Martín Fernández de la Torre carried out for José Juan Mulet after having designed a multi-dwelling building some years earlier in Ciudad Jardín for this owner.

This building seen here was designed in 1935 as a two-storey house for a single family. Today it is located at the corner of Jorde and Graciliano Afonso streets, in what at the time of its construction was the first line of the beach of Las Alcaravaneras.

With formal characteristics fully framed within the rationalist aesthetic, the design of this house was fundamentally based on the views of the bay, so it was provided with large continuous terraces, huge glazed areas and the development of cornices and eaves that strongly marked the horizontality of the whole ensemble. 

Situated then on the seashore, with the sand almost at its foundations (it even had its own pier, now disappeared), the construction is formally assigned to the current known as "ship architecture", already carried out by Mercadal at the Club Náutico and later followed with extraordinary success by Aizpurúa.

Unfortunately, this Casa Mulet, over the years, has ended up located in a place that has nothing to do with the original, besides having been the victim of numerous insensitive reforms and extensions that have left it almost unrecognisable from its original avant-garde appearance.
