Arroyo Building

Among the multifamily buildings designed by architect José Blasco, this is one of the most interesting. It was built for the developer Andrés Arroyo y González de Chávez in 1934, at the corner of La Rambla and Numancia Street. Initially, the architect in charge of the project was Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre, but a personal conflict between the developer and the Gran Canarian technician led to José Blasco taking over the new project.

The building is expressed as a simple and logical construction, not without boldness in its design. The external walls enrich the expressiveness with a rough and coarse texture of dark pigmentation, something rarely seen until then in the city. Its volumetric solidity of compact composition is lightened by some linear components and by the splendid wooden shutters placed in its openings. Blasco always considered this work of his, completed in 1937, as one of the best he had made in Santa Cruz.
