Santiago or Los Melones Battery

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Sites of memory · Year: 1797

This battery was improvised in 1797 due to Nelson's attack. Also known as Los Melones battery, as it was located in the orchard of the same name overlooking the marina of Santa Cruz, it was nothing more than a small construction manned with the cannons that had been removed from the Candelaria battery. In the mid-19th century it was used as a dwelling for the trusted labourer of the Engineers' Park. It was declared unsuitable for military purposes in 1924.
