San Rafael Battery

This battery was located on the right bank of the Almeida ravine, roughly where the monument to Franco now stands. It had been designed by the military engineer Fausto Caballero. It was built between 1788 and 1790. It had a trapezoidal shape and was established to prevent a possible landing between the San Miguel fort and the Candelaria battery, protecting both the coastline and the road that ran through these parts towards the urban centre. It was armed with two cannons and garrisoned by one sergeant, one corporal and five soldiers. In 1797, when Nelson attempted his invasion, it had been evacuated as its location was considered unsuitable.
