Pilar Battery

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Sites of memory · Year: Siglo XVII

The battery of Nuestra Señora del Pilar was located at the top of the estate known as Los Melones, between two walls: the Marina wall and another elevated one. It is believed to have been built in the 17th century, but on the same site a new military construction was carried out in 1743 under the project of military engineer Manuel Hernández. The construction was configured by means of a structure open with three embrasures in the wall itself. Its three cannons could only fire straight ahead, without flanking any other coastline. By 1880 it was in ruins due to abandonment.
