Las Tiñosas Battery

This military installation was located on land situated at height above sea level in the southern sector of Santa Cruz's coastline, above the current linking tunnel of the South motorway, beyond the Refinery facilities.

The battery was established as a defensive factor due to the difficult geo-strategic situation of the Archipelago during the Second World War and the possible occupation by the belligerents.

Authorised in August 1941, it seems to have been completed the following year, armed with a cannon from a German cruiser of the First World War.

Las Tiñosas remained active, with new equipment, more modern artillery and a projector for night firing, until 1970, when it was dismantled. Two years later the land it occupied was sold off. Today only some remains survive between an industrial zone and the southern access-exit road.
