Regla or San Francisco Battery

This military battery, of which today only the outer enclosure remains, was built near the hermitage of La Regla with the purpose of protecting a wide coastal sector where small coves and beaches abounded.

It was built in 1656 and expanded in 1742, the year in which its name was changed to San Francisco. In the late 19th century, in 1886, a new larger fortification was planned due to the conflict between Spain and Germany over the Caroline Islands in the Pacific.

As happened with almost all the coastal defences of Santa Cruz, there came a time when its defensive usefulness was considered null, so in 1932 it was disarmed and dismantled. Today only its outer walls remain, located between the service entrance to the port and the Auditorio de Tenerife.
