Santa Isabel Battery

This battery was built in 1741 on what had been the Calvario redoubt, established in 1656. Its location was above the San Antonio battery, perhaps somewhat closer to the urban centre. The Santa Isabel battery was designed by military engineer José de Andonaegui and had four ashlar buildings comprising a guardhouse, storeroom, shed, and warehouse. It was armed with two 24-pounder cannons, two 16-pounders, and two 9-inch mortars, and its garrison consisted of a sergeant, a corporal, and five soldiers. By the late 19th century it was in a state of ruin. Currently, at the junction of Calle de La Marina and San Francisco, there is a space with a cross that possibly marks the site of the original Calvario.
