La Lucha Tobacco Factory

When the tobacco manufacturer Manuel López commissioned architect Pisaca in 1923 to design his tobacco factory, he wanted a representative and opulent building at the corner of Calle del Pilar and Suárez Guerra. The plot he had was enormous, so not only was the factory projected, but also nine spacious homes.

Given the competitiveness among tobacco manufacturers at that time, the building's prestige had an emblematic function. To achieve this, the architect proposed an opulent chamfer, adding a stylised pavilion supported by a wide loggia. The same was done with the office, now disappeared, to be occupied by the firm’s owner, covered with profuse Nasrid decoration, so fashionable at the time as the quintessence of refinement, and widely accepted on the island since the early 20th century in the homes of the upper bourgeoisie.

As for the factory, following the typology for this type of building, it had a continuous ground floor, converting the mezzanine into a wide gallery for manufacturing work; the rest of the space was kept double height.

Currently the ground floor and mezzanine house various commercial premises.
