Rex Cinema
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Cultural spaces · Subcategory: Theaters · Year: 1954 · Authors: José Enrique Marrero Regalado
This building intended to house a cinema was designed in 1953 by José Enrique Marrero Regalado for the entrepreneur Antonio Lecuona.
The façade is a clear example of symmetry and classicism. It has two doors at the ends, extended at the top by a balcony with balustrade and a blind wall decorated with a glazed opening turned into a cartouche. The central sequence is marked by the plinth and the lateral pilasters. The upper floors have paired window openings that slightly project over the lower row.
The cinema, with a capacity of 926 seats, was inaugurated in 1954, quickly becoming one of the best halls in the city. The Rex has hosted various businesses after its closure as a cinema. Its interior space is completely altered from the original.
