García Morales House

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: 1934 · Authors: José Enrique Marrero Regalado

This single-family home built in 1934 on commission from Francisco García Morales is one of the first works designed by the Tenerife architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado in Santa Cruz.

Of marked rationalist style, the house was popularly known as "no news from the front", alluding to the absence of decoration on its façade, which clashed evidently with the appearance of the surrounding buildings, rich in ornamentation and opulence. The García Morales house was a milestone of modernity arising in the middle of the Hotels neighbourhood, a place designed in its time (no more than twenty-five years before the appearance of this house) to house large modernist and eclectic buildings.

The quality of this home is excellent within its style. It is a harmonious set of appropriate scale, with a measured and ingenious treatment on the façade, and it has integrated discreetly into the urban fabric despite its divergent surroundings.
