Casa Duque

This house, designed by Marrero Regalado in 1950 for José Duque on a corner plot, was one of the few built under the guidelines proposed by the City Council, which planned a kind of garden city for this entire area. Speculative pressures and various subsequent urban plans put an end to this original idea.

Marrero proposed a building representative of the mixture between classicism and Canarian regionalism. In such a way that it features on the corner where the two streets meet, where the perspective is clearest, a classical façade composed of a porch with Tuscan order and a neoclassical Canarian-style doorway for the terrace. On the flanks stands out the large wooden balcony (a symbol of traditional Canarian architecture) along with other typical stonework elements. The structure is made with very good materials and it is evident that it was crafted by specialised labour. The wedge-shaped garden, adapting to the corner, is another of its achievements.

The building was completed in 1953.
