Meléndez House
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: 1933 · Authors: José Enrique Marrero Regalado
Single-family home designed by the architect Marrero Regalado in 1933 for Aurora Meléndez, located in what was then Rambla XI de Febrero, in the area later known as "Las Tinajas".
In Marrero's own words, " The style of the house is modern with colonial nuances of the country and the construction will be of great simplicity but of superior quality materials and perfect presentation ".
The construction has a marked sense of traditional Canarian regionalist architecture: wide windows with tiled eaves, shutters, and a typical wooden balcony. The bold and modern dining room, located on one side, with a semicircular window overlooking the garden, is noteworthy.
Together with the neighbouring buildings, erected during the 1930s, this property gives the entire area an urban appearance of enormous quality that surpasses the usual concept of a garden city.
