The expansion of the urban centre planned around the extension of Méndez Núñez street, already begun in the 1930s, made it necessary to build a new parish for the Toscal neighbourhood.

The project for this church was carried out in 1940 by José Enrique Marrero Regalado, resulting in a complex that combines elements of Baroque tradition, others of Herrerian production, and traditional Canarian aspects.

The façade is composed like a altarpiece and features a central niche in a triple niche between Solomonic columns. The twin towers, which flank its portal, are topped with a spire according to the Herrerian model. The lateral bodies, intended for the rectory and parish dependencies, are conceived according to Baroque aspects, but with clear domestic references of vernacular tradition.

The church began construction in 1941 and was completed in 1947.
