This sculpture, made in 1944 by the artist Ossip Zadkine (Vitebsk, Belarus, 1890–Paris, France, 1967), was loaned by the Middelheim Museum of Antwerp for the First Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition , held in 1973 in Santa Cruz.

The work, made in bronze, shows a complex figure with almost baroque tones, somewhat removed from the cubism that Zadkine practised at the beginning of his career.  

Phoenix was located for several months, until its return, on the stretch of the Rambla near the start of San Martín Street.
