Street Sculpture Route I: 22. Introversion

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Route · Subcategory: Street sculpture I · Year: 1973 · Authors: José María Subirachs

This niche or temple designed to house a monumental open hand is the work of the Catalan artist Jose9 Mareda Subirachs (1927-2014), remembered for his sculptural decoration of the Passion facade of the Sagrada Familia.

The present work, created in 1973 for the I International Street Sculpture Exhibition, is located on the main promenade that diagonally cuts through Garceda Sanabria park. The palm of the hand is conceived as hollow and its perfection almost has a magical presence. The podium that houses it, made with a great richness of texture, sacralises this presence, giving it the aspect of a symbol. It is a sculptural work made of concrete, with a perfect finish and under the dual conception that distinguishes the author's work.
