Meteorological Observatory

In 1887 the City Council had created a meteorological observatory managed by teachers from the Secondary Education Establishment. Installed in the former Convent of San Francisco, it began operating the following year and, from 1903, started to disseminate daily weather reports for some time. Afterwards, its activities were interrupted.

A new meteorological observatory was founded in 1920 by the Cabildo, with the City Council handing over the equipment from the previous one. The new building was constructed between 1922 and 1924 based on plans by the architect Antonio Pintor, on a large plot located between San Sebastián and Los Molinos streets.

Today this building houses the Research Centre of the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs of the Central Administration, dependent on the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which assumes all the powers and functions of the National Meteorology Institute (INM).
