La Moderna Furniture Factory

At the corner of Calle del Pilar and Méndez Núñez, this furniture factory was built in 1922, promoted by the cabinetmaker Manuel Espinosa.

The building was designed by the architect Antonio Pintor, who conceived it with two floors and a façade divided into three sections, one of them chamfered. The exterior is articulated through sober elements, using pilasters that run the full height and with very sparse decoration. Modernist elements stand out, including carpentry signs carved in Art Nouveau script. The crowning is closed by a parapet where elegant vases are found. In subsequent years, a pavilion with one more floor was added at the end of the front facing Méndez Núñez.

The interior of the building remains almost intact. Until the factory ceased operations at the end of the 20th century, the ground floor was where the pieces were made, and the upper floor served as a showroom for the furniture. Both spaces are interrupted by a line of cast iron columns.

Today the building still houses, no longer the factory, a furniture sales centre.
