Hernández Otazo Building

This building, designed by architect Antonio Pintor between 1923 and 1925 on commission from the merchant and developer Octavio Hernández Otazo, was one of the first to be built in height on the road that would later become Avenida de Anaga, today Francisco La Roche and at that time known as Avenida de Cuba.

The construction follows an aesthetic framed within the purest eclectic language, so practised by Pintor throughout his career. It features profuse exterior decoration, the use of striking cornices, balconies with balusters, use of pilasters in the different sections and, as the main motif not designed in the original project but realised during its execution, two lateral towers that give it prestige. 

Construction work began in the mid-1920s and was completed in 1930.

With façades and entrances both on La Marina street and Avenida de Anaga, the building was partially altered in 1959, when, following the project of architect Domingo Pisaca, two more floors were added.

The Hernández Otazo building set the construction trend in terms of height for the various buildings that would be erected over time along the front line of this part of the city.
