La Rosa School (former Onésimo Redondo or Northern School Group)

At the ordinary plenary session on 28 October 1891, the City Council asked the municipal architect Antonio Pintor to study the possibility of creating a schoolhouse project to alleviate the absolute precariousness with which the city counted in the field of education.

By 1893 Pintor had already completed the project, and by mid-1898 the City Council decided to locate the new school on a plot situated in the section between Santiago Street and La Rosa Street, right in the El Toscal neighbourhood. Work began immediately and was definitively completed in April 1899.

The building presents a nobility of forms and finishes almost unique at the time. The architect, attracted by French models, developed an elegant and long façade with two bodies projecting at the ends. 

The educational facility had at its rear, facing Santiago Street, a group of houses, still standing today, intended to accommodate the teachers and various school staff.

The new group was called the Northern Group, as it was located in this sector of the population; years later, after the Civil War, it was renamed Onésimo Redondo; today its name is CEIP La Rosa.
